Emily and Dylan

I met with Emily and Dylan around Christmas time right after I decided to start taking weddings again in the Kansas City area. It was my first client meeting in over three years since almost all of my past brides had booked me over the phone or through email prior to that. I remember showing up to Starbucks a little bit nervous and feeling a little bit dusty on my “wedding interview” skills, but these two were so kind as I fumbled through my sample album and asked them about their wedding day. This cold, snowy winter had left my camera on a shelf for several months and those same feelings of “dustiness” came out when I showed up at their session.  I think all photographers have to “get their head in the game” at the first location and then it gets easier and creativity starts flowing from that point on, and it was the same for me! I felt a little nervous and excited about my first engagement shoot in months! We had decided to go to a few of their favorite spots for their session and it was such a beautiful day for photos! Two hours after walking around Kansas City with Emily and Dylan I was in “the zone” and was really excited to see what the photos looked like, and I was very happy with the connection that I was able to capture between this lovely couple! These two are so beautiful and kind, and I can’t wait to photograph their wedding at the Martin’s country home this Fall.

A sigh of relief

2014-03-10_00012014-03-10_00022014-03-10_00032014-03-10_0004

This winter has kicked my butt. Moving to another new state (a much colder one) and trying to jump start my business, learn a new city, find a new church, and find authentic friendships has left me weary. Not the mention attempting potty training, reading 20+ new books on bettering my life, sleep training and remodeling another house. Ok, enough with the lists. It’s been a year for the books, and it ended with a winter that almost left me in a dizzying depression for a week or two. Maybe I just needed my Vitamin D. Or maybe it was my need for adventure and change that left me caged in our home for weeks as the kids went through rounds of sickness and we went through cycles of feet of snow. I went outside last week after another forecast of 20s-30s and saw the tiny bulbs of hope popping out of the dead tree branches and I almost cried. Spring was inevitable, my suntan would come back, my children would play outside, I would finally get to dig my heirloom vegetable garden that I’ve attempted for the last three years.

I made it. I made it through the bleak, cold, harsh, snowy winter and today’s 72 degree day was like an IV to my parched soul. I remembered how wonderful and beautiful my life is. I remembered how even though I’ve been through a hard, stressful move that God has placed friends, ministries and provisions in my lap and all I had to choose to do was endure the “stress” with patience and hope. The hope was lacking I have to admit. I felt stuck in this place of not having control over anything, and it helped me realize that the only thing that I actually have control over is myself. My outlook on life, my actions and my love towards others was the only thing I really needed to focus on. Enough with the worry. Enter into prayer and have faith, and you know what? God didn’t fail me. He provided through people who love us, provided through the referrals of photographer friends when they were too busy and provided through new business ideas.

My life is so rich. I get to spend every day with my children, serving my husband home cooked meals, and the freedom to engage other people in honest relationships.  I can look at other people’s more glamorous lives, or look back at my own “peak” of success, but nothing really compares to the peace and ease of love that I have right now. In this very season. Spring is coming and I feel this sigh in my heart that I made it through.

Isaac and the Green Family

Emily emailed me a few months ago about photographing her newborn baby Isaac and I was so excited when she sent me a photo of his room! Designer Kimberly Thomas created the room and then locked the door, with instructions not to peek until after Emily had her baby.  What a FUN way to have a room done! I asked her if she ever broke the rules and she said that she stayed true to the rules… I could never have done that. Their daughter, Norah, is really close to my son’s age and so it was so much fun to go around with her and see what she loves to do too.

Mallory and Bowen

Mallory and Bowen drove to Lubbock from the Dallas area for Valentine’s Day and wanted some photos done. Bowen is just adorable and was just running around exploring every location that we went to, what an adventurer he will be! His mother’s love and devotion to him was so evident and such a beautiful thing to photograph the day before Valentine’s.

Tim’s Farm

My step-dad, Tim Benham, has a pick -n- pull junk yard and auto body shop in west Lubbock called Peace of Mind and has recently curated several old timey junkers… my favorite. I’ve been wanting to photograph Solomon on an old truck for a few months now because he is in love with all cars, trucks and things with wheels. I took him out there after a stop in at Bahama Bucks for a Jamaican punch/white coconut snow cone and met with my high school best friend to take some shots of her babies too. We rode around in the golf cart while the kids “wheeeee-d” with excitement and luckily I got every picture that I wanted of all the kids. Add a boy into a junk yard and you are guaranteed to have lots of smiles.

Keylee

Shooting Keylee’s senior photos was unreal to me, I met her when she was three years old… that moment has finally come when I say “I’ve known you almost your whole life”. I feel old, that scares me. Keylee and her mom met me in Lubbock for her session and it was such a beautiful, windy day in Lubbock. I think I even got a sunburn, something that Kansas City has not given me in 6 months. We had such a fun time going around different places and laughing about very funny conversations that only “old friends” could have. I wish you all the best in cosmetology school, Keylee!
